As all mums out there will know, despite all your best intentions, sometimes you need to put the TV on and let your child watch it, especially now it's getting colder and darker!
However if you’re anything like me, you’ll want to make sure that if your little ones are going to watch something on television, then it has to be wholesome and educational, so that it’s not just wasted time.
For those that find themselves staring at a list of shows with no clue where to start, then hopefully this should help. Here are our top three TV programmes that not only S enjoys but that I don’t mind sitting through either.
1. Postman Pat

How can I not start with the classic that is Postman Pat. Before I even had S, I vowed that I would introduce my children to Postman Pat. I’m not talking about the film (because that’s plain scary), or special delivery because that’s quite noisy, but the original seasons 1-2, which can be bought on DVD and the newer seasons 3-4. They are a quiet, peaceful series to watch and don’t encourage anarchy like so many shows that are available for pre-schoolers. It’s also lovely that it’s set in the countryside. You can always here the sounds of birds and the each program deals with the little problems that occur when living in the country. Why not introduce your little on to this classic whilst indulging in a little nostalgia yourself.
2. Puffin Rock

What an incredibly beautiful hand drawn TV series! We love Puffin Rock. It’s narrated by Chris O’Dowd which adds a pinch of humour and it’s one of the writers is the wonderful Tomm Moore responsible for “Song of the Sea” (another beauty). However this is not just a feast for the eyes, S and I have learnt all sorts about the lives of puffins and marine life too. When the grandparents saw it, they too chimed in with “I never knew that”. Give this a try and you won’t be disappointed. You can also buy the books if want to read the stories at bedtime too. It’s currently available to stream on Netflix.
3. If You Give A Mouse A Cookie

Just in case you thought they all began with ‘P’, here is our newest discovery and a firm favourite. Based on the books by Laura Numeroff and illustrated by Felicia Bond, it follows the adventures of Mouse, his human, Oliver and their friends Moose, Pig, Cat and Dog. Mouse is very cheeky and is always asking Oliver for items like a crayon or, you guessed it, a cookie and then ensues the adventure. It’s perfect for encouraging ingenuity, kindness and imagination. At the end of every episode they ask the audience, “what do you think will happen next” which gives you a perfect opportunity to create a story and adventure with your child. At the moment you can view it on Amazon prime.
